Why it's worth protecting:

BIG SUR

El país grande del Sur, “the big country in the South.” Or just el Sur Grande, “the Big South.” That's what Spanish settlers in the 1700s called the impenetrable coastal wilderness below their capital in Monterey.

Big Sur. A hundred miles of sheer cliffs, crashing waves, rocky coves, narrow canyons, and towering redwood forests from Carmel to San Simeon. The Santa Lucia Mountains seem to rise straight up out of the deep blue Pacific. There's no mistaking you’re standing at the jagged edge of the continent here.

For the eventual American settlers, like the Spaniards in their Missions and the Native Americans who were there centuries before them, Big Sur was accessible only on foot or horseback. It wasn’t until 1937 that a road 18 years in the making was finally carved through this rugged landscape. That road was California Highway 1 — the legendary Pacific Coast Highway.

Today Big Sur remains largely wild and undeveloped save for a few scattered outposts clinging closely to the PCH. With just a small number of permanent residents a handful of visitor accommodations, it’s by intention a place most people travel through rather than stay. Driving the PCH through Big Sur is the perfect way to experience one of the most dramatic meetings of land and sea anywhere on Earth.

Despite its ruggedness and isolation, Big Sur isn’t immune to the forces that threaten California’s coastal environments. The changing climate produces more frequent and severe rainstorms punctuated by more intense periods of drought. Coastal erosion, massive landslides, and formerly rare coastal wildfires are all accelerated by this more extreme climate cycle. Even places as imposing as this have vulnerabilities and need our protection.

The landscape itself — its inaccessibility and sheer beauty — has always conferred a certain mystique to Big Sur. Even today there’s no settled definition of where exactly the region begins and ends. Writer and journalist Lillian Ross, a longtime resident, famously suggested "Big Sur is not a place at all, but a state of mind.”
